  • Internship Do’s and Don’ts

    1. As our office receives openings for internships, they will be shared with all students at the same time. Timing is of paramount importance. Typically if someone asks for an intern, they’re looking for the intern to start as quickly as that same week or the following week.  It is important to stay on top of your email because that’s where you will hear about internships, site visits, full-time jobs and other unique opportunities.

    2. Get your resume to Allison ASAP. ASAP typically means the same day or within 24 hours of the email being sent. If Allison asks for a cover letter, please provide a brief one.

    3. Please monitor your emails as the firm will follow up with you directly if they would like to schedule an interview. Typically the first interview is a phone conversation or through zoom. You must dress professionally. Have your resume ready to send them by email if they ask for it.

    4. Please research the principals of the firm, the firm itself and the names of anyone that you will be meeting with. Use LinkedIn, company websites and Google. Know the sector that they operate in and any recent projects that they may be working on.

    5. Be prepared to ask questions and you will typically be asked in some form or fashion « what are your strengths, what are your weaknesses and why this firm or this opportumity ». If the answer to the question can be found on the website, don’t ask it.

    6. Follow up within the same business day with a thank you email to the person that you interviewed with and ask what you can do to move forward in the process.

    7. If you get the internship, accept or decline in writing within a reasonable timeframe (typically a maximum of 72 hours). Notify Allison immediately in writing.

    8. If you are a non-US student, you must follow the guidelines for CPT (Curricular Practical Training). Please reach out to Nicole Hejazi and and copy Natalie and Allison. Ask Nicole for directions on how to start the CPT process. You may not start working until all of your documentation is done. Working before the paperwork is done or working after your end date is illegal in the US.

    9. First day and all days: Arrive 10 to 15 minutes early. Arriving on time means you’re late. Use the accounting principle FILO - First in, last out. Figure out the parking situation in advance.

    10. Be professional. First impressions are everything. Avoid slang (yo, dude, I’m gonna) and cursing; texting or web surfing while working; sharing intimate personal details, political opinions, or religious views.

    11. If you finish a project or task, ask what else you can work on!

    12. Be courteous to all employees and be humble. You are the low person on the totem pole. It won’t kill you to make copies, file some papers or perform some other menial tasks. If that situation persists, let Allison know.

    13. As your internship winds down, contact the person who made you the offer and let them know how much you appreciate the opportunity and ask what paperwork needs to be completed prior to departure. If you’re hoping the opportunity will turn into full-time or part-time, find out the best person to speak to and make sure they know of your interest. Complete any tasks that you have been assigned and make sure that someone knows what you’ve been working on and if there are steps that need to be transitioned to the next person.

    14. Contact Alison and let her know your internship is ending. If you are a non-US citizen, contact Nicole Hejazi to see what you need to do to close out the internship.

    15. Add the internship to your resume so your resume is ready to go the next time you’re looking for internship or full-time employment.

  • Scholarship Opportunties

Here is a list of organizations with scholarships available. Take a look at their websites for details. Let us know if we can help in any way. Some of these links may be old, we do our best to keep it updated. If you find a missing link, please let us know.

    Goldie Initiatives

    • The Goldie Initiative is a robust scholarship, mentorship, networking and leadership program for female graduate students passionate about commercial real estate. The application for the 2023-2024 academic year is open April 1st – June 4th, 2023.

    2023 American Immobiliare Scholarship

ETS Scholarships | Robert "Bob" Moses Scholarship

    • The Educational Testing Service is offering a national scholarship opportunity designed to support a graduate student from an underrepresented group who is pursuing a master’s or doctoral degree in mathematics education or a STEM discipline. The inaugural scholarship is named in honor of the late Bob Moses, a pioneering civil rights leader, and educator who founded The Algebra Project, a national U.S. mathematics literacy program aimed at helping low-income students and students of color achieve the mathematical skills in high school that are a prerequisite for success in college and beyond.
    • The scholarship award is $15,000 and the deadline to apply is April 3, 2023. To learn more and apply click here.

  • Real Estate Clubs

    • Graduate Real Estate Club. All students can join. Students may contact the club president, Samya Ababou at graduaterealestateclub@miami.edu
    • Student Chapter of the Associated General Contractors (AGC). All graduate students can join.
    • Real Estate and Finance Association umrefa@gmail.com
    • Women in Construction
    • Real Property Probrate and Trust Society, email rpptl@law.miami.edu for more info.

  • Parking

Visit Parking website for more information.

All vehicles parked on campus are required to have a valid UM parking permit and must park head-in only. Parking permits are issued with an assignment to a specific color zone. Park in your assigned color zone where the lots and/or garage entrance sign includes the color matching your parking permit. The School of Architecture is adjacent to the Yellow Parking Zone, however, please note that some of your courses will be taking place in alternate locations on campus so the Yellow Zone may not be the most efficient location.

Discounted Night & Weekend Permits are available after 4pm and on weekends. The University offers Coral Gables Campus visitors the ability to purchase parking via PayByPhone app or pay machines. Access is restricted to certain lots during the weekday from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. The rates are $2.50 per hour or $11 per day. You can decide whether an annual permit or the pay-as-you-go option is best for your needs. For example, a regular annual permit costs $553 for 12 months, equaling $46.08 per month. A day pass using Pay-by-Phone costs $10. Therefore, coming to campus one day a week would entail 4 or 5 visits per month, equaling $40 (5 x $8). If there is a likelihood of coming to campus just another one or two times per month, the annual permit would be the better option. However, if a person was only coming to campus for an hour or two at a time, the financial advantage of Pay-by-Phone may be more significant.

  • Travel

The MRED+U Program encourages students to participate in conferences and events for educational and professional opportunities. The MRED+U Program and Advisory Board will sponsor select students to attend conferences and events throughout the academic year.

    Prior to Booking Travel:

    Prior to departure:

    Packing list:

    • Business Cards
    • Professional and Business Casual Attire
    • MRED+U Shirt

    After the conference:

    • Follow-up with people you met at the conference.
    • Submit one paragraph describing your experience. This may be used on the MRED+U website, social media and/or provided to the board to thank them for their support.
    • If you received the MRED+U Travel Scholarship, refer Travel Scholarship Policy below and submit the Expense Reimbursement Form along with required documentation (compiled into one PDF).

    TRAVEL SCHOLARSHIP POLICY

The purpose of this Travel Scholarship Policy is to outline a set of procedures and guidelines for scholarship recipients as notified by the MRED+U office encompassing all academic-related travel in order to maximize control over travel costs.

Topics covered by this policy include procedures and guidelines for requesting authorization for travel information on booking, and obtaining reimbursement.

    Air or Rail Expenses

    • The MRED+U program will pay for air or rail fares to the approved destination.
    • Reimbursement limits to be determined based on location and included in the Award Letter.
    • All participants should book their own travel and save original receipts for reimbursement.
    • We can only accommodate coach class fares (AMTRAK Acela fares are allowed). If a participant wishes to travel in a higher class of service, MRED+U can only reimburse the cost of the  equivalent coach fare.
    • Airline flights purchased with frequent flyer miles, are non-reimbursable.
    • If a participant needs to travel to or from different destinations rather than round-trip, or dates different than determined in the Scholarship Award Letter, we will only reimburse the lesser of the cost or the equivalent round-trip fare. In this case, please provide a screenshot of what the flight would have cost had you booked for the pre-determined days and locations. Discuss with MRED+U Office prior to booking if you any questions about this.
    • Airfare receipts must include the full itinerary (airline, flight dates, times, etc.) AND the price paid (proof of payment).

    Ground Transportation

    • MRED+U will reimburse ground transportation to and from the airport, as well as any taxi or public transportation expenses incurred traveling to and from the meeting and associated events.
    • Please save your receipts for any taxis or public transit. Credit card statements will not be accepted.

    Hotel Accommodations

    • All hotel arrangements are to be organized by the student.
    • Students are expected to share a room, please coordinate and plan accordingly. You may split the cost in advance, or reimburse one person for the entire fee, but this can get confusing so please take note of the limits and split it appropriately.
    • If you stay additional nights, you will only be reimbursed for the nights determined in the Scholarship Acceptance Letter.
    • Hotel receipts must include all hotel charges and proof of payment.

    Meals

    • No meal expenses are incurred or reimbursed by the MRED+U Program.

    Reimbursement Procedures & Accounting Requirements

    • The Scholarship Acceptance Letter will detail the maximum amount to be reimbursed at the end of the trip.
    • You will only be reimbursed for actual expenses (if you don’t reach the maximum amount, you will not be given the difference).
    • Please send your flight and hotel details to the MRED+U email (mredu@umiami.edu) upon reservation.
    • Please submit all reimbursement requests within 30 days after the event.
    • All requests should be accompanied by original receipts for all items.
    • University of Miami’s Accounting Department may request additional information on expenses that lack proper documentation.
    • UM/MREDU cannot pay for entertainment, recreational fees or spa services, clothing, special equipment, or other items not listed.
    • Reimbursements will be paid according to the account information in CaneLink -- either Direct Deposit or mailed to the address listed.
    • Payments will be processed up to 6 weeks after submitting the forms.

    How to Submit Expenses:

    1. Compile the following documents into one PDF:
      1. Completed and signed Expense Reimbursement Form
      2. Itemized hotel receipt. Hotel receipt must include all charges, and zero balance or proof of payment.
      3. Airfare receipt and itinerary. Airfare receipt must include itinerary, amount paid and proof of payment. Refer Travel Policy regarding flights on dates or destinations outside of the pre-approved.
      4. Label receipts if necessary (i.e. “Taxi from Airport to Hotel”; “Screenshot of flight price for approved days”).
    2. Email completed, signed, compiled documents to mredu@miami.edu. Please include your name in the document name.

Important Note: If you have received a funding from any other source to subsidize this trip, you are not eligible for this scholarship. We have a set Travel Scholarship budget for the Academic Year. Using funds inappropriately will lead to diminished funds for future travel opportunities.

  • Accessibility Recommendations

The MRED+U Program highly encourages you to turn on caption capabilities in Zoom, PowerPoint and when available in other presentations. It is important to do this in advance of scheduling a meeting to ensure it is enabled.

    Zoom

The MRED+U Program highly encourages you to turn on caption capabilities. This gives a participant the option to turn captions on or off. If you do not turn it on in advance, participants will not have the option.

    ADVISING SUMMER/FALL 2025

If you haven’t done so yet (please see below in which category you would fall into), please schedule an advising meeting with Natalie.

Click here to schedule. Remember to choose FIRST “Virtual” or “In person”, otherwise it won’t show any times available.

    • Students graduating in May - No need to schedule advising unless you have questions.
    • Students graduating in June - No need to schedule advising unless you have questions. I will reach out to some of you who have a special case for summer. Everyone else should be registering for RED690 and RED699 (3 credits each unless we have discussed something different).
    • Students continuing to the Fall - A hold will be placed on your CaneLink account and will be removed after your advising appointment. Please schedule advising so we can discuss. While there is not a registration deadline per se, it is important to register soon to hold your spot in a class.
    • Dual degree students - Usually you do advising with Nicole, but I'm happy to meet with you if you have any questions or just want a quick chat.

    CoStar Acknowledgement Form

MRED+U program provides a variety of software tools as part of the educational curriculum. In order to use them, we are required by the software vendors to provide documentation on your student role.

One of the providers – CoStar – also requires that each student complete an CoStar Acknowledgment Form that outlines the terms of usage.  Specifically, any use of this platform (and all software tools at the University) are for educational and academic purposes only.  Furthermore, you will be unable to log-in to CoStar unless the form is properly completed and returned to the school. Please note that if you are currently working, you need to insert the name of that company in the document (or write N/A if not applicable), sign the form with your signature (as an authorized user), print your name below and also write in your @miami.edu email address.  Your log-in ONLY works using your school email and no other.  Both new AND returning students need to fill out and complete this form.

Once you have completed this form, please rename to include your LAST NAME (if you accidentally forget it may override someone elses form) and upload the document directly to the BOX FOLDER

Make sure to fully complete the form and to use your University of Miami email only (otherwise you will not be registered for this essential software).

     DEADLINE

    Submit Mentor Requests

One of the key components to our program is the access to our Advisory Board, which is comprised of almost 60 leading real estate executives representing a variety of real estate sectors.

Please take some time to research all of the Advisory Board members and then provide us with your top three choices. Many of our members are nationally recognized and therefore may not be the right fit as they are committed to events and activities across the country. Some of our members are already mentoring a student that started the program in August 2021 or January 2022.

Please do not request the person or the firm that represents your “ideal” job. There are other ways we can connect you with that person or that firm. Try and identify someone who is in the sector that you are interested in with the goal that your mentor will be able to help you expand your networking circle and provide advice on how best to obtain interviews and resume building skills.

Please reach out to Allison Freeland with any questions. She knows them all personally and has a fairly good idea of their existing time constraints or whether they are already working with another students.

    1. List three choices
    2. Research ALL of the advisory Board names, not just the ones you see in the papers every day
    3. If you have an industry sector you are focused on, look for Advisory Board members in that sector:
ie, hospitality, multi-family, retail, commercial/office, luxury condo, finance, construction, architecture
    4. Use LinkedIn, company websites, google etc to avail yourself of info on all the Advisory Board members and what they do
    5. Set up a time to talk to Allison if you are stuck or don't know where to start
    6. Submit your names ASAP to Allison by email.

One of the providers – CoStar – also requires that each student complete an Acknowledgment Form that outlines the terms of usage.

    4. Use LinkedIn, company websites, google etc to avail yourself of info on all the Advisory Board members and what they do
    5. Set up a time to talk to Allison if you are stuck or don’t know where to start
    6. Submit your names asap to Allison by email.

     DEADLINE ICSC Foundation Mentorship Program

The ICSC Foundation Mentorship Program is a unique academic year-long program, which is designed for undergraduate and graduate students who are interested in learning more about the marketplaces industry. Mentees receive exposure to the industry outside of the classroom, including access to information, new experiences and opportunities to build new connections. Mentors are ICSC members with relevant experience who are excited about building the industry’s next generation of talent. They play an invaluable role in furthering a student's professional growth.

    Process & Schedule

    • August - September 2022: Students apply to the program and complete their online mentee profile used to match them with a mentor. Mentors and mentees are matched based on their specific industry interests and geographical locations.
    • September: ICSC Foundation matches students with their mentors.
    • September - October: Mentorship pairs are informed of their match and undergo a brief orientation to acquaint them with the online mentorship platform and expectations for the mentoring relationship.
    • October: First mentor/mentee meetings begin and goals for the relationship are developed.
    • October - May: Meetings continue among pairs with check-ins and virtual events conducted throughout by the ICSC Foundation.
    • May - June 2023: The Foundation conducts a final evaluation and check-in at the end of each pair's relationship.

    DEADLINE: CoStar Acknowledgement Form

MRED+U program provides a variety of software tools as part of the educational curriculum.   In order to use them, we are required by the software vendors to provide documentation on your student role.

One of the providers – CoStar – also requires that each student complete an Acknowledgment Form that outlines the terms of usage.

Once you have completed the form, please rename to include your LAST NAME (if you accidentally forget it may override someone elses form) and upload the document directly to the folder that was set-up for this purpose:  CoStar Acknowledgement Forms – MREDU 2021-2022.  You MUST log in with your UM Credentials to have access to upload (enter your UM email at login page and it will direct you to the UM login page). You will not be able to upload from your personal GMail account. Please do not email it directly to us.

Please complete this form no later than by the end of the day on Tuesday, August 10, 2021.

    More Information

The Colvin Case Study Challenge is a national intercollegiate real estate case study competition for full or part-time students enrolled in a college or a university real estate program (undergraduate or graduate or a university sanctioned real estate club/organization). The Challenge is to document a recent innovative real estate project within the team’s metropolitan region. Unlike many other case competitions, this is a post-development report and documentation of a recently completed project (or project phase). The Challenge is designed to hone professional skills and reveal the knowledge base and understanding of markets, project valuation, finance, urban design and sustainability, entitlement processes and operational issues.

The competition may be offered for (a) course credit, (b) as part of a course requirement, or (c) as an extracurricular activity. The number of teams from an individual school or program is not limited.

    • Round 1: Teams submit a written case study of an existing real estate development project.
    • Round 2: Four teams will be chosen to present their case study, in person, to an industry panel of judges at the University of Maryland, College Park.

     DEADLINE: Advisory Board Mentor Requests

One of the key components to our program is the access to our Advisory Board, which is comprised of almost 60 leading real estate executives representing a variety of real estate sectors.

Please take some time to research all of the Advisory Board members and then provide us with your top three choices. Many of our members are nationally recognized and therefore may not be the right fit as they are committed to events and activities across the country. Some of our members are already mentoring a student that started the program in August 2019 or January 2020.

    4. Use LinkedIn, company websites, google etc to avail yourself of info on all the Advisory Board members and what they do
    5. Set up a time to talk to Allison if you are stuck or don’t know where to start
    6. Submit your names asap to Allison by email.

    COVID PROTOCOLS

Remember that this is a fluid situation which requires us to be flexible and accommodating. These rules/restrictions/protocols may change, please look out for updates.

    • ULI is requiring all participants to be fully vaccinated. If you are not vaccinated, please do so, or let us know if you prefer to participate virtually or discuss an alternative.
    • Students must follow UM protocols whether they are required by the venue/event or not (for example, students must wear masks at all indoor events).
    • Travelers must comply with University quarantine and testing requirements upon return for both domestic and international travel. Additional more restrictive measures may be required depending on the location and length of travel and are subject to change.
    • If any COVID-19 symptoms develop, immediately self-isolate and report this change in clinical status.
    • Students, faculty, and staff must be particularly diligent in answering the Symptom Monitoring questions.
    • Students, faculty, and staff must remain 100 percent asymptomatic to attend worksites, including offices, fields, etc.
    • Students, faculty, and staff must rigorously and consistently observe our preventive measures, particularly while at work but also away from work (6-feet distancing, wearing face mask when with other members of the community, frequent handwashing/sanitizing, surface scrubbing, etc.).
    • Fully vaccinated travelers should follow CDC's recommendations for traveling safely including wearing a mask over your nose & mouth; staying 6ft from others & avoid crowds; and washing your hands often or use hand sanitizers

    TRAVEL PROTOCOLS

    • We will register students for the conference, please confirm your participation by uploading your Field Trip Form. We are only able to register ULI Student Members, please become a member right away if you haven’t yet. FINAL DEADLINE to confirm your participation September 10.
    • You may book travel through the UM Travel Portal. All travel must be booked through the UM Travel Portal. More information.
    • Students are expected to arrive on the morning October 10 and we will gather as a group in the afternoon. ULI Fall meeting ends October 14 after the morning session. Please see tentative schedule on the Students page.
    • The conference is at the McCormick Place Convention Center Chicago, but I would recommend looking at hotels along the train. They can get pricy near the convention center. As you do the research on hotels, it would be helpful to share with the WhatsApp group so that students can book in the same hotel/area.
    • As soon as your travel arrangements are booked, please send us a copy of your itinerary.
